The Refusal to Grow Up
Diana West has written a book that addresses the serious problem of our infatuation with the frivolity of youth. This was stated in a different way in a previous post. The Death of the Grown-up: How America's Arrested Development Is Bringing Down Western Civilization looks like it would be essential reading for all of us.
The ditty "Growing old is unavoidable; growing up is optional" characterizes too many of us. When physical adults refuse to grow up, leaving the irresponsibility of youth, they are unprepared for the serious rigors of life, especially those caused by others who intend to overwhelm western culture. It is shocking to think that far too many of our lawyers, judges, politicians, professors today have never left the thought of the sixties. We are "governed" by a bunch of adults who never grew up. Just as in the sixties, they cannot understand those who have matured.
